How To Decode VIN Number Characters
There are 17 digits or characters in every vehicle's unique VIN. Here is what each VIN character represents, to help you better understand your vehicle.
Digit 1: Country of Origin
The first character shows where the vehicle was manufactured. The most common country codes are:
- 1 United States
- 2 Canada
- 3 Mexico
- 4 Foreign vehicle made in the US
- 9 Brazil
- J Japan
- W Germany
- S England
- L Taiwan
- K Korea
- Y Sweden
- V Europe
- Z Italy
Digits 2–3: Manufacturer & Division
The second character identifies the manufacturer, often the first letter of its name, such as B for BMW. Because a character can stand for several makers, the third character combines with the first two to pinpoint the exact division. Together, the first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI).
- A Audi
- B BMW
- C Chrysler
- F Ford
- G General Motors (Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Buick)
- H Honda
- L Lincoln
- N Nissan
- V Volkswagen
Digits 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section
These characters identify specific details about the vehicle:
- 4 Safety features specific to the model
- 5 The vehicle's series
- 6–7 Bodystyle and body type
- 8 Engine size
Digit 9: Security Code
The ninth character is the check digit, a security code used to detect invalid or altered VINs, based on U.S. Department of Transportation guidelines.
Digit 10: Model Year
The tenth character represents the vehicle's model year.
- 1981–2000 Letters B through Y (I, O, Q, U and Z excluded)
- 2001–2009 Numbers 1 through 9
- 2010–2030 Letters A onward (the cycle restarted with A in 2010)
Digit 11: Manufacturing Plant
The eleventh character indicates the assembly plant. Each manufacturer has its own set of plant codes, for example, some Toyota codes are R for Lafayette, Indiana; S for Princeton, Indiana; and U for Georgetown, Kentucky.
Digits 12–17: Production Serial Number
These ending characters are the production line numbers, the vehicle's unique serial number. Characters 10 through 17 together are known as the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a VIN decoder?
A VIN decoder is a free tool that translates the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number into detailed vehicle information: manufacturer, model year, engine, transmission, body style, assembly plant and safety equipment. VinSpecs uses the official NHTSA vPIC database.
Is VinSpecs really free?
Yes. VinSpecs is completely free with unlimited VIN lookups. No registration, credit card or payment is ever required.
Where does the vehicle data come from?
All data comes from official U.S. government sources: the NHTSA vPIC database for specifications, the NHTSA Recalls API for open safety recalls, and NHTSA crash test programs for safety ratings.
Where do I find my VIN?
The VIN is on the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), on the driver-side door jamb sticker, and on your vehicle title, registration and insurance card.
How can I check a VIN number for free?
Enter the 17-character VIN into the free decoder on VinSpecs.org and click Decode. You instantly get the vehicle's specifications, open safety recalls and NHTSA crash-test ratings, no registration, no payment.
How many digits are in a VIN?
A modern VIN has exactly 17 characters, a mix of letters and numbers. It never contains the letters I, O or Q, which are excluded to avoid confusion with the digits 1 and 0.
What can a VIN number tell you?
A VIN reveals the vehicle's model year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, body style, and country and plant of manufacture, plus its factory safety equipment, and it lets you check open recalls and crash-test ratings.
Can I look up a car by VIN for free?
Yes. VinSpecs lets you look up any car by its VIN completely free, with unlimited searches and no signup, using official NHTSA government data.
How do I check a VIN number's details?
Decode the VIN on VinSpecs to see the full factory build, engine, drivetrain, assembly plant and equipment, then check the recall and safety sections for that year, make and model.
